Our Favourite Video Ads of All Time

Guinness | Surfer

The primal emotions: excitement, anticipation, survival. The relentlessly tribal beat of the music. The gorgeous, metaphorical imagery. It may be a clichéd choice, but we can't not pick this forever iconic ad for one of our all-time faves.

Old Spice | The Man Your Man Could Smell Like

It may have been talked about to death, but this advert is still mesmerising for its originality and audaciousness. Endlessly quotable, effortlessly cool, it's the epitome of fun advertising. (And practically all of it is done through practical effects.)

Heat Electric | Creature Comforts

The original Creature Comforts campaign is still fondly remembered for its distinctiveness. Though simple at first glance, these videos have a superb eye for detail and still hold their charm even after repeat viewings. An instant classic.

Cadbury | Gorilla

Oh-so-wacky and immediately recognisable. This is great awareness advertising: rather than shoving the product in your face, it evokes everything great about the product to remind you why you loved it in the first place. Often imitated, never equalled.

Diet Coke | Diet Coke Break

On the opposite end of the product awareness scale comes this classic, game-changing advert. The flipping of traditional gender roles was truly surprising at the time and helped pave the way for equal opportunity ad ogling.

Sony Bravia | Bouncy Balls

Another video that looks like a special effects masterpiece but is, inexplicably, entirely real. The boldness of this ad is what makes it remarkable. Over two minutes are dedicated to the visuals and music before any payoff arrives. Mesmerising.

John Lewis | She's Always a Woman

Before John Lewis was an ad-making behemoth, there was this beautiful short film. Here framing, soundtrack, colours and transitions all come together to tell one simple but moving story. It's a masterclass in the power of video.

Jaffa Cakes | Total Eclipse

For pure memorability, this one might just take the (Jaffa) cake. The ad that spawned a catchphrase which must be muttered in the inexplicable accent. It's fun, silly, but ultimately does exactly as intended: makes you want a Jaffa Cake.
